Have you heard or read about EPOC and wondered what it means?
EPOC stands for Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. Sometimes people also call it the exercise afterburn, referring to the calories that you continue to burn after you exercise.
When you exercise at high intensity, doing HIIT or intervals or lifting heavy weights, your body goes in what is called “oxygen debt”. EPOC is the process that replenishes muscle glycogen, hormones, and more through oxygen consumption and brings your body back to its resting state.
The higher the intensity of your exercise, the higher and longer afterburn you will have. So go lift something heavy. Run hard. You’ll continue to burn calories long after your bum has settled back on the couch!
